Tsutomu Miyazaki: The Case at a Glance
Between August 1988 and June 1989, Tsutomu Miyazaki murdered four young girls in Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture, and tormented their families with letters.
He was arrested in July 1989 in Hachiōji, after a girl’s father confronted him in a park. He was sentenced to death in 1997, and the sentence was upheld by Japan’s Supreme Court in 2006. He was executed in June 2008.
The media coverage of his case fuelled a moral panic about “otaku” culture in Japan, a reaction many critics later argued was overblown. This case is told across two episodes.
- When: 1988 to 1989
- Where: Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture
- Outcome: executed 2008
