Gβday you lovely listeners. Iβve been getting some requests from listeners for Sherlock Holmes OTRβs recently. And this particular OTR, launched in 1939 to 1940 starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson.
Basil Rathbone, besides having a delicious first name and an ass kicking last name, was made most famous by his role as Sherlock Holmes β he was iconic as this character, bringing to life what every reader had in mind when they thought of Sherlock β regal, perhaps a little arrogant, and all around intellectual laser pointer for solving mysteryβs.
And his partner in crime β solving, Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson, brought in a swagger, a coolness, mixed with a pinch of silliness, buffoonery, and rather charming attitude towards Sherlocks endeavours. Rathbone spoke fondly of Bruce, saying,β [Bruce had an] avuncular presence, providing the perfect counterbalance to Rathbone’s briskly omniscient sleuthβ, and as the show ended would go on to say β “after Bruce, it would be a near-unthinkable heresy to show Holmes without him”.
Folks I hope you enjoy todayβs episode, there are a couple of blips, but Iβve hand-crafted this particular episode to launch the Sherlock Holmes OTR Remastered series on itβs best foot, and I hope you love it. Enjoy.
